The last thing I expected after my breakdown on Chicago Joe And The Showgirl was to fall in love.
One night my friend Sacha Puttnam, the son of film producer David, arrived to take me out. He brought a musician friend of his called Gavin Rossdale. With Gavin and I there seemed an instant connection. Around this time I became friends with Amy Fleetwood, the daughter of Mick, the founder of Fleetwood Mac.
Gavin and I grew closer. This was in the days before he formed his band Bush. We were in a nightclub and he hinted he had feelings for me. We had our first kiss and I could sense the fairytale beginning.
A few days later I was out with Amy and I told her I had met someone I liked. We got chatting and Amy then told me about a man she was keen on. Suddenly it occurred to me that it was the same guy. It was Gavin.
Gavin admitted that, yes, he was involved with Amy but that the relationship was new and that he had developed strong feelings for me and didn’t know what to do. Neither did I. The inevitable happened. It was the first time for me, but Gavin made it clear he wasn’t going to give Amy up.
One evening while I was waiting for Gavin at his flat a desperate state of despair overwhelmed me. I searched the bathroom cabinet and found razor blades and aspirin. After taking the tablets I slashed my wrists and arms.
Afterwards, I returned to LA to film the Robert Redford movie A River Runs Through It. I had a cameo role, which was perfect after what I’d been through.
